Corrections

What we accept

Four kinds of corrections are welcome.

• Factual errors. Wrong date, wrong dimensions, wrong material, transcription error in a hallmark, mistyped catalog number, broken citation link.
• Attribution disputes. The piece is graded A but you have evidence it should be C, or the artist is wrong, or the workshop is wrong. Bring the evidence and we will read it.
• Additional citations. The piece appears in a book or article we have not cited, or there is a museum holding we missed, or there is a published auction record that strengthens or weakens the current grade.
• Missing references. An entire entry we should add to the bibliography, an artist we should be tracking, a hallmark variant we have not catalogued.

What we do with a correction

Submitted corrections enter a review queue. An editor reads the submission, checks the evidence, and decides whether to apply the change, hold for expert review, or close the request with a note. We aim for a first response within ten business days. Complex attribution disputes that require book or archive consultation can take longer; the submitter is updated when the timeline extends.

The original record and the correction are both preserved. When a grade changes, the previous grade is kept in the version history with the date of the change and the evidence that prompted it. Nothing is silently overwritten.

Anonymous and credited submissions

Corrections can be submitted anonymously. Submitters who want to be credited on the record they corrected can include their name, and we will add an acknowledgement to the version history if the correction is accepted. The catalog improves by being open to outside expertise; credit, where wanted, is part of how that works.
