A bird rendered in worked silver and set with turquoise, this pin draws on one of the motifs most closely identified with the MATL workshop. Among Matilde Poulat's chosen subjects, the dove and other birds, along with flowers and tiny bells, recall the whimsical imagery of contemporary Mexican folk art (Morrill, p. 216).
The figural approach suited Poulat's background. She trained as a painter at the San Carlos Academy before turning to silver, and her designs formed part of the post-Revolution search for a native Mexican aesthetic (Morrill, p. 216).
The turquoise reflects the workshop's stone-setting craft, perfected by Ricardo Salas for the firm's jewelry and figures (Morrill, p. 216).
