Provincial Pattern Coffee Pot

Decorated with six semicircular incised lines on its front and back, the Provincial pattern coffee pot pairs a silver body with a rosewood handle in one of Spratling's recognized hollowware designs. It is recorded in Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver, in Spratling's own Folio of Drawings, and in Phyllis Goddard's field guide, which preserves the price climb from $88 wholesale in 1958-59 to $126.80 in 1967.

The incised semicircles are cincelar work articulating the plain body (Morrill, pdf p. 15), and the rosewood handle supplies the warm material set against silver that defines Spratling's tableware (Morrill, p. 224). The design was awarded a prize by the National Sindicate of Silver Manufacturers of Mexico, and a very similar design appears in Spratling's Folio of Drawings.

The coffee pot was among the coffee and tea sets shown in "The World of William Spratling," the exhibition that toured the United States in 1965 (Morrill, p. 77).

With a documented prize and a place in Spratling's own drawings, the Provincial pot is among his fully recorded hollowware.
