Curatorial note

An old-fashioned goblet worked with parallel horizontal lines and three applied silver discs is one of the well-documented forms of the Spratling holloware line, made for water or julep service. The applied disc and the incised line were both workshop signatures, combined here into a clear, banded surface. Examples produced around 1949 to 1951 add an incised line surrounding each applied disc, a small detail that helps date a piece.

The goblet is recorded across the major references, including Spratling Silver and its Centennial Edition, Morrill and Berk's Mexican Silver, American Art Deco, and Phyllis Goddard's field guide, and it was included in The World of William Spratling exhibit that toured the United States in 1965.

Surviving catalogues price it at $15.60 wholesale in 1958-59 and $19.20 in 1967, a record of its long commercial life.

With its broad documentation, exhibition history, and a datable variant detail, this goblet is among the most securely placed pieces in the Spratling tableware canon.
