A rosewood candlestick studded with applied silver stars and beads brings Spratling's wood-and-silver pairing to a lighting object, the dark grain set against scattered points of bright metal. The star, a recurring Spratling form, here becomes surface ornament rather than structure.
Candlesticks were made in Spratling's workshop from its earliest years (Morrill, p. 36), and combining wood with applied silver reflects the simpler, surface-led approach his designs took on as they matured (Morrill, p. 73).
