Curatorial note

A bracelet of flat links wrapped on the diagonal and topped with silver balls is a modular First Period design built to extend: the same design was used for a necklace, and the bracelet and necklace could be linked together to form a longer necklace. That convertibility is the design idea, the diagonal wrap and capping ball repeating across a band that could grow.

The wrapped link and ball belong to Spratling's early geometric vocabulary. The design was also produced by Silson in silver plate, part of that firm's plated production of Spratling designs, so plated versions circulate alongside the sterling.

The bracelet is recorded in both Cederwall and Riney editions of Spratling Silver. Both the bracelet and the necklace have been reissued, so hallmark and construction distinguish a period sterling example from the Silson plate and the modern reissue.
