Curatorial note

Mother-of-pearl inlaid into silver plate on a small cream pitcher shows Los Castillo extending its signature inlay practice to the functional tabletop — the hummingbird motif rendered in iridescent shell against the silver body. Morrill situates pitchers and tea service forms as the expected output of a Taxco orfebrería (Morrill & Berk, 1994), and the workshop's sustained engagement with inlay across diverse natural materials makes such a piece consistent with its documented design program.

Morrill records Los Castillo using crushed stone, onyx, and tortoiseshell as inlay materials across a range of forms (Morrill, 1996). Mother of pearl belongs to the same family of organic, texturally varied materials, its nacreous surface offering a reflective contrast to the silver-plate ground. Silver plate rather than sterling suited daily-use vessels; it brought the workshop's inlay vocabulary into a functional register without the weight of formal presentation silver.

The hummingbird creamer is a genuine record of how consistently the workshop's design intelligence extended beyond its signature sterling objects into the objects people used at table.
