Curatorial note

A pitcher in hammered silver plate with stone inlay represents the fuller scope of the atelier — what Morrill & Berk's 1994 survey distinguishes as orfebreria, the production of larger functional objects such as trays, coffee sets, and pitchers alongside the jewelry lines.

Stone inlay is a core and well-documented Los Castillo technique. Morrill records workshop examples set with crushed stone and onyx worked into silver forms, a material vocabulary that draws on Pre-Columbian craft traditions while meeting the tastes of mid-century collectors (Morrill 1996, p. 174). On this pitcher, a hummingbird provides the central motif, rendered in inlaid stone against a hand-hammered ground whose textured field gives the bird visual relief against the metal.

The silver-plate body places the pitcher within the accessible production tier Los Castillo maintained alongside its sterling output throughout decades of continuous operation from the late 1930s onward.
