A plain silver coaster trimmed with a diagonal line around its rim, this is one of the simplest objects in Spratling's table range, the entire design a single incised border. It belongs to the first design period, 1931 to 1946.
The diagonal rim line is cincelar work, the engraved marking Spratling's smiths used to articulate plain silver (Morrill, pdf p. 15), here turning an unadorned disc into a finished object with a single confident gesture.
A modest piece of tableware, it shows the workshop's belief that one well-judged line could carry a design.
