Square Silver Earrings Scored in Quarters

Each square is scored into quarters, the incised cross dividing the silver face into four equal fields: the decoration is a single engraved gesture, and the crisp geometry is the whole of the design. It is a clean, modern treatment of a plain square earring.

The motif was widely reused. Per the existing record the same quartered-square design served for buttons, a bracelet, and cuff links, a single form carried across a family of objects in the workshop's habitual way. A study of the catalogs places these earrings in production between about 1940 and 1945.

Geometric scored-square jewelry from the early 1940s is among the more wearable of the workshop's stone-free designs and remains accessible to collectors.
