Curatorial note

These silver spurs in the "Conquistador" style, made circa 1939-1940, show Spratling extending his design into the world of riding gear and Mexican equestrian tradition. The Conquistador name evokes the colonial horseman, and the spurs translate that heritage into worked silver of the first design period.

Working silver into functional riding equipment was part of the breadth of the Las Delicias output, where Spratling's design vocabulary reached well beyond jewelry and tableware. Spurs of this kind are among the more unusual objects to carry his style, tying it to a specifically Mexican material culture.

As first-period Conquistador-style silver spurs they belong to the rarer, more specialized end of Spratling's production, and such pieces are encountered only occasionally.
