Curatorial note

A silver horn shape at the top answers a matching rosewood horn at the base, with a rosewood center section diagonally wrapped in silver wire, making this candlestick a study in symmetry and material contrast. The pairing of rosewood and silver is a recurring Spratling combination, the warm wood set against the worked metal.

The mirrored horn forms at top and bottom give the piece an upright, sculptural balance, while the diagonally wrapped wire on the central column carries the eye between them. This is holloware conceived as composed form rather than plain function.

Rosewood-and-silver objects of this ambition are collected as examples of how Spratling treated table silver as sculpture, and a candlestick of this construction is a substantial piece of that output.
