Curatorial note

A cabochon amethyst crowns the handle of this large silver ladle, set above three rings on a silver feather design, with the pouring lip placed on the left. Spratling routinely carried his jewelry vocabulary into serving pieces, and here a feather motif and a cabochon stone, the stuff of his pins and rings, finish a piece of functional flatware.

The ladle belongs to the first design period, 1931-1946, when the workshop's hollowware and serving pieces shared the same handwrought language as its jewelry.

It is recorded in Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. Large serving pieces with applied stone ornament of this kind come to market only occasionally.
