The pairing of dark wood with bright silver insets is the material contrast Spratling cultivated in his table pieces, the warmth of wood against reflective metal that Morrill connects to Jean Puiforcat (Morrill, p. 224).
The servers carry an exhibition history: the design was included in "The World of William Spratling," the 1965 touring U.S. museum show whose published inventory listed salad servers among the silver on view (Morrill, p. 77).
