Curatorial note

An irregularly shaped mahogany bowl, its perimeter set with silver discs, shows Spratling letting the material dictate the form rather than imposing a regular profile on it. The free outline reads as modern; the inset discs at the rim are his familiar way of marking where wood meets metal.

Wood-and-silver objects of this kind were a recognized part of his holloware, and his table pieces in wood and silver appeared in the 1965 McNay survey of his work (Morrill, p. 77). By the Third Design Period (1951-1967) this pairing of native hardwood with restrained silver had become a settled part of his vocabulary.

The bowl is recorded in Penny Morrill's Maestros de Plata.
