This round candlestick of swirled diagonal wire belongs to the tinwork that was part of Spratling's workshop from its earliest years, when a tinsmith and his assistants produced candlesticks, frames and other objects at La Aduana (Morrill, p. 36). The swirled wire turns a humble material into a piece of design.
That the same design was also produced in copper underscores how Spratling treated form as portable across materials, the silhouette holding whether rendered in tin or copper.
