Gilded cuff links shaped as a frog seated on a lily pad belong to a small family of frog designs Spratling worked during the Third Design Period, the same frog appearing in a necklace and a box. Gilding warms the silver and suits the naturalistic subject.
Recurring animal forms running across different object types, here the frog across cuff links, necklace and box, reflect how Spratling developed a motif into a coherent suite of pieces. The naturalistic whimsy is characteristic of his design instinct (Morrill, p. 66).
