Spratling named this design "Cholula," after the great pre-Columbian site, and the name signals the source: a narrow, flat-chased, sculptured silver cuff whose worked surface carries the indigenous reference Spratling built his early work around (Morrill, pdf p. 39). The flat chasing gives the slim band a low relief that catches light along its length.
Worked entirely in silver and kept narrow, the cuff relies on the quality of its chasing rather than on stones or applied ornament. As a First Design Period piece, it is read by its early hallmark and by the crispness of the chased surface.
