A salt shaker built on a rosewood base with an inset silver circle and a silver top is Spratling's material contrast applied to one of the smallest objects on the table, the warm wood body framing a single disc of silver beneath the silver cap. The inset circle is the only ornament, the design carried by the meeting of wood and metal.
The shaker is recorded in Morrill and Berk's Mexican Silver. Worked without applied decoration, it relies on form and material, and a clean original with intact rosewood is identified by its hallmark and handwork.
