Curatorial note

A sun and a moon, paired as earrings in silver and copper, carry one of Spratling's enduring motifs, the warm metal set against the cool to mark the two bodies. The design was popular enough to run through the workshop's catalogues from 1942 into the 1944 to 1945 season, and the same motif was worked into a matching pin.

The pairing of silver with copper to register a contrast of color was part of the workshop's mixed-metal vocabulary in this period. A motif sustained across several catalogue years, and extended from earrings to a pin, points to a design that found a ready audience.

The earrings are recorded in the Morrill and Berk survey of twentieth-century Mexican silver. As a documented, repeatedly catalogued design, they are a well-anchored example of the workshop's First Period jewelry.
