Fish-Form Cocktail Vessel with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay

The cocktail vessel is where Los Castillo's inlay tradition stepped from the body onto the table. On this small flat form, a fish rendered in mother-of-pearl sits against a silver-object ground, the iridescence of the shell animating what would otherwise be a static field of worked metal.

Inlay of shell and contrasting materials into silver was central to the workshop's vocabulary. Morrill records the workshop's sustained commitment to variety of design across its decades of production, and the orfebrería tradition — flatware, pitchers, trays, service objects — gave that vocabulary a domestic register beyond personal ornament. Stromberg counts Los Castillo among the talleres grandes whose scale gave Taxco's smiths the financial support and latitude to design and experiment across forms (Stromberg, 2008, p. 41).

This object is a characteristic if understated record of how the workshop extended its craft into the service arts.
