A lidded vase uniting mixed metals with stone inlay brings together the two techniques on which the Los Castillo workshop built its name, married metal and mosaic worked into a single vessel. The lid extends the design surface and turns a container into a small sculptural object.
The shop's reputation rested on combining metal with mosaic and inlay across boxes, trays, and decorative objects (Morrill, p. 206), and on married-metal hollowware in copper, brass and silver (Morrill, p. 98). It was founded in 1939 by Antonio Castillo and his brothers after they left William Spratling's Las Delicias (Morrill, p. 166).
