Design 5537 is identified by the inventory number Margot's Taxco workshop stamped on the back rather than by a name. Those numbers were a working catalog; Morrill records that the smaller the number, the earlier the design tended to be (Morrill, p. 15), so a pendant in the 5500s sits within the enamel-on-silver work that followed her 1955 line.
The sterling-and-enamel pairing is the basis of Margot's reputation. The champlevé enamel-on-silver technique had been initiated at Los Castillo by Reveriano Castillo and Miguel Melendez, and Margot perfected it into one of her major lines (Morrill, p. 166).
Margot designed everything her company made, often noting where the loop or clasp sat on the back of a piece and which earrings or brooch a pendant was meant to accompany (Morrill, p. 168), so a numbered pendant could belong to a coordinated set within her catalog.
The surviving number locates this one in Margot's inventory.
