A pair of silver earrings shows the MATL workshop at its plainest, with the dense, baroque silverwork standing on its own rather than framing colored stones. The form distills the shop's ornamented manner to an everyday wearable scale.
The MATL taller produced an enormous range of jewelry, Ricardo Salas recalled some three thousand types in all, and silver earrings were part of that steady output (Morrill, p. 216). The workshop's baroque repoussé surfaces, the forms that distinguished its work from the start, carry through even in its simpler pieces (Morrill, p. 83).
Matilde Poulat introduced the "MATL" mark in 1934 as part of the post-Revolution search for a distinctly Mexican aesthetic rooted in folk and Pre-Conquest sources.
