Curatorial note

An elongated X gives these cuff links their whole form, the silver and ebony crossing in a single clean figure. The dark wood set against bright metal is Spratling's recurring material pairing, here reduced to its simplest geometric statement.

The X is the kind of abstract, legible motif Spratling favored for small accessories, where the design has to read instantly. Silver and ebony answer each other across the crossing, the grain of the wood against the polish of the metal.

As small silver-and-ebony fasteners they belong to the menswear accessories the workshop produced, applying the studio's material idiom to objects meant to be worn daily, and such links surface at auction only occasionally.
