Curatorial note

Spratling called this his "Heavy Disc" pattern: a butter knife with a single applied disc set below a band of wrapped silver wire, giving a small utensil a recognizable design signature. It is recorded in Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver field guide.

The applied disc and wrapped wire are part of Spratling's vocabulary of worked silver, carried here onto flatware so the table service matched the design language of the jewelry. Naming the pattern in his catalogs reflects how Spratling treated even modest utensils as designed objects.

The design has since been reissued, so correct hallmarks matter for collectors distinguishing vintage examples. A documented Heavy Disc butter knife is collected as part of Spratling's flatware output.
