The simplified, slightly tapered cylinder set against warm wood handles echoes the restrained forms of Jean Puiforcat, whose pairing of rosewood with silver Morrill identifies as a touchstone for Spratling (Morrill, p. 224).
The set belongs to the first design period, 1931-1946, the foundational years of the workshop's hollowware, and shows the wood-and-silver combination that ran through his domestic pieces.
