Frog-Handled Creamer and Covered Sugar Bowl with Stone Inlay

The frogs are what make this set — stone-inlaid amphibian figures perch on each of the two vessels in this creamer and sugar, transforming modest silver-plate tableware into a characteristic expression of Los Castillo's long engagement with natural motifs.

Both pieces are built on a rounded, squat form worked in hammered silver plate, the planished surfaces catching light across every curve. The frog finials are sculpted from a mottled green stone, set as fully three-dimensional animals rather than flat mosaic cladding. On the lidded sugar bowl the frog serves as a finial; on the creamer it perches at the handle-and-rim junction, echoed by a small stylized leaf or paddle form on the sugar's long handle. The flat, arched handles keep the profile clean, letting the stone figures carry the decorative weight.

Stone inlay alongside tortoiseshell and onyx runs throughout the Los Castillo workshop's documented production, pairing silver and silver plate with materials drawn from the natural world across both jewelry and decorative hollowware (Morrill & Berk, Mexican Silver, 1994). A matched table service in which the same stone-frog motif appears on both the sugar finial and the creamer handle speaks to the workshop's integration of motif and function, and to the long-tenured team of silversmiths who made that consistency possible across decades of output.
