Curatorial note

A round interior worked against a scalloped exterior gives this wooden salad bowl its quiet interest, the contrast of two profiles carrying a piece that uses no silver at all. The all-wood object shows Spratling's third-period interest in form and material for their own sake, the same restraint that governed his plainest silver.

Dated to 1951-1967, it belongs to the late workshop's broad range of table objects, where carved wood stood alongside silver and the two materials were treated as equals.

All-wood Spratling table pieces are an uncommon part of his output.
