"Lorenzo" Parrot Brooch

The "Lorenzo" parrot resolves a living bird into a study of parallel silver cylinders — the body, wings, and tail built from stacked tubular rods whose muted finish reads at once as feathers and as architectural ornament. A rectangular amethyst cabochon occupies the breast, its deep violet providing the sole chromatic warmth in an otherwise all-silver composition. The bird faces left in clean silhouette, the head pared to a rounded dome with a ringed eye, the tail fanning into a graduated spread of the same hollow tubes.

Figural animals were among William Spratling's most recognized early forms at Las Delicias, the workshop he established in Taxco in the 1930s to revive the region's silver tradition. Morrill records the parrots, owls, and jaguars Spratling was fashioning in silver as a distinct strand alongside his Aztec-influenced bracelet work — animal motifs occupying their own place in his early output. The "Lorenzo" name gives the parrot a character that sets it apart as a recurring subject in the Spratling vocabulary rather than an incidental design.

The form's longevity carries its own significance: later reissues confirm it never left the workshop's repertoire. Period examples dating to circa 1940–46 appear with both amethyst and azurmalachite stones, each reading differently against the same tubular silver frame.
