Curatorial note

This wood bowl stands on eight legs, with half-circles of silver inset around the exterior rim, a piece from the Third Design Period of 1951 to 1967. The footed form lifts the bowl off the surface and turns it into something more sculptural than a plain vessel.

The inset silver half-circles are a restrained version of the wood-and-silver pairing Spratling worked across his hollowware, the metal banding the rim rather than crowning the form. Set into wood, the silver reads as line rather than mass.

The design is recorded in Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. Footed wood-and-silver bowls from the later period surface only occasionally.
