Enrique Ledesma

Ledesma studied painting and sculpture at the San Carlos Academy of Art in Mexico City, apprenticed in his father's silver workshop, and worked in a large taller while he was in art school. In Taxco he moved through the central workshops of the Golden Age: William Spratling's Taller de Las Delicias, Los Castillo, and Héctor Aguilar's Taller Borda, before opening his own shop at Exconvento #10.

His mature work is closely associated with silver, obsidian, azurite, tortoise, mixed metals, and other lapidary materials. Many pieces are signed and numbered; Hougart records Ledesma marks with eagle numbers 3 and 60, plus registration ML-64, and notes that some pieces were sold through or co-marked with Platería Cortés and Platería Margarita.

Ledesma matters because he connects the major Taxco ateliers to a more personal, material-driven modernism. His jewelry keeps the Taxco language of handwrought silver, but gives stone, line, and surface an unusually refined balance.
