Turquoise set into mixed metal gives this cigar box its color, the blue stone worked against the contrasting copper and silver that Los Castillo made its own. The married metals and the inlaid turquoise turn a functional humidor into a decorative object (Morrill, pp. 98, 206).
The Castillo brothers founded their Taxco taller in 1939, applying their stone-and-metal vocabulary to a wide range of boxes and smoking accessories. A turquoise mixed-metal cigar box is encountered from time to time among collectors.
