Inlaid stone over a hammered body gives this box both texture and color, joining the planished metal surface with the mosaic of stone for which Los Castillo was known. The hammered ground and the stone inlay together carry the decoration (Morrill, p. 206).
The Castillo brothers founded their Taxco workshop in 1939, where stone inlay was a deep tradition across jewelry and objects alike. A hammered, stone-inlaid box of this kind reaches the market only occasionally.
