Curatorial note

A salad serving spoon with a hammered silver bowl and throat, crossed by a silver bar set with a single bead and finished with a rosewood handle, this piece matches the fork of the same first-period service, hammered metal and turned wood working as one. It is recorded in Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver.

The rosewood-and-silver pairing is the combination Morrill places at the center of Spratling's table designs (Morrill, p. 224), and the beaded crossbar repeats the rhythmic accent he favored on serving pieces. The hammered throat keeps the marks of fabrication visible as part of the surface.

Serving pieces of this kind were among the salad servers listed in the 1965 "World of William Spratling" exhibition inventory (Morrill, p. 77).
