A small wooden tray with a shaped lip, this is a modest household object from Spratling's third design period, between 1951 and 1967, when the workshop was producing wood-and-silver tableware in quantity.
The interest is entirely in the proportion and the worked lip; there is no applied silver here, only the form of the wood itself. Trays were a recurring product of the workshop, listed among the objects shown in the 1965 "World of William Spratling" traveling exhibition (Morrill, p. 77).
A plain, functional piece, it represents the everyday end of the workshop's range.
