mosaic brass tray

A square brass body set with turquoise stone tesserae, its perimeter cut through with organic apertures, this tray belongs to the body of work that the period scholarship treats as Salvador Terán's signature contribution after leaving Los Castillo. Penny Morrill records his workshop producing boxes, trays, and other decorative objects in stone mosaic, the medium providing the color and texture that the straightforward brass form organized and contained (Morrill & Berk, 1994). A period label retained on the piece itself places it in the 1950s—the opening decade of his independent taller.

The composition is direct and assured. The recessed field is packed with small blue-green tesserae set in a close grid, providing a dense saturated ground against which two pale white curvilinear forms, themselves laid in stone, trace an interlocking scrollwork that reveals the brass beneath at their centers. The perimeter is defined not by a plain rim but by a brass surround punctuated by irregular cutouts, giving the silhouette a sculptural weight that anchors the mosaic field without crowding it. The interplay of blue-green, white, and exposed brass is crisp and purposeful.

Terán had been at Los Castillo since its founding in 1939—a cousin of the Castillo brothers—and left in 1952 to open his own taller in Mexico City (Penny C. Morrill, 1996). His interest in mosaic had roots even before that departure; Morrill documents a large-scale mosaic mural he executed for the family's retail space while still at the workshop, and the tray form represents the same impulse brought to an intimate scale. Pieces dateable to the 1950s carry particular interest for understanding how Terán built his visual language during the formative years of his independent practice.
