Curatorial note

Bands of silver cross the diagonal corners of these tortoise-shell cuff links, framing the mottled shell with bright metal and turning a simple square into a study in contrast. The pairing of a warm organic material with silver is a Spratling signature, and the diagonal banding gives the small face a clean, modern geometry.

The design was a durable commercial success: per the existing record it appeared in every Spratling catalog from the mid-1950s through 1967 except for the 1958-59 years, with a 1967 wholesale price of $4.80. That long catalog life marks it as one of the workshop's reliable men's-accessory staples rather than a one-off.

The cuff links are recorded in Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. Because the design was made over many years, examples survive in reasonable numbers and remain an accessible entry point for collectors of Spratling's later production.
