Curatorial note

The Coralillo pattern set a rosewood handle with silver bands, and this cheese knife carries the design that also appeared in ebony, a working flatware form that stayed in the catalog for years.

Its catalog history is unusually well documented: priced at $8.80 in the 1958 to 1959 wholesale catalog, $9.20 in 1961, and $11.20 by 1967, a span that places it squarely in the Third Design Period and shows it as a steady seller across the decade. The design has since been reissued.

The pairing of an exotic wood handle with applied silver bands is the workshop's signature approach to flatware, the warmth of rosewood against the brightness of metal. The knife is recorded in both Spratling Silver by Cederwall and Riney and Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. It is also held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) alongside the matching cheese board
