Amethyst Fruit Knife

Two amethysts set into a small silver blade turn an individual fruit knife into a piece of designed table silver, the purple stone warming the metal. It is recorded in both Penny C. Morrill's Maestros de Plata and Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver field guide, and dates to the first design period of the Taller de las Delicias.

Setting semi-precious Mexican stone into a useful object is characteristic of Spratling's early work, where the line between jewelry and tableware was deliberately blurred. The small scale and personal use of a fruit knife make the amethyst accents feel considered rather than decorative.

Documented first-period flatware of this kind is collected alongside the jewelry, valued for showing how Spratling carried his material vocabulary across every category of object the workshop made.
