Parrot Sweater Clips Brooch

Made as sweater clips, a pair of parrots brings color of a different kind to silver, figural birds designed to be worn paired at the collar.

The bird is treated in the flattened, stylized manner that runs through Spratling's figural work, where the pattern of the form carried the design (Morrill, p. 73). As sweater clips the parrots are also a reminder that the workshop designed for daily wear, not only for the jewelry box.

They date to the First Design Period, 1931 to 1946, when Las Delicias was producing a wide range of small wearable silver.
