Curatorial note

This heavy necklace of carved linked sections with three descending pendants is a Silson product, made by the New York firm licensed to produce Spratling designs, and it closely follows a necklace Spratling made in 980 silver. The Silson version documents how his designs were translated for the American costume market.

Silson, Inc. began producing Spratling designs in New York in 1941 under patents registered the year before (Morrill, p. 257), working in plated and base materials rather than the heavy silver of the originals. The clasp here is typical of the closures Silson used on its Spratling pieces, a useful marker for identifying the licensed work.

As a silver-plate Silson piece tracking a known Spratling silver design, this necklace belongs to the distinct collecting category of the licensed American output, separate from the Taxco workshop's own silver.
