Tie Clasp of Ebony and Silver

Ebony and silver joined in a tie clasp, with a simple U-clip to grip the tie, show Spratling applying his wood-and-silver vocabulary to men's accessories. The dark ebony against silver gives a small object real material contrast, and the clip is left plain and functional.

Silver-and-wood combinations of this kind were part of the simpler, surface-led approach Spratling's designs took on at maturity (Morrill, p. 73).
