The Cholulteca pin depicts the cross-section of a conch shell, and this example is a slightly later variation of the design, probably a year or two after the earlier version that shared the same catalogue number. It was also produced with a hinged, two-prong clip back, a small construction variant.
The scrolled, sectioned conch was an established form in Spratling's vocabulary (Morrill, p. 124), drawn from a Mexican natural source and abstracted into worked silver. The piece belongs to the First Design Period (1931-1946).
