Curatorial note

A caddy spoon worked in a 1820 design, its hammered bowl shaped like a shovel: this is Spratling looking to an earlier European silver form and rendering it by hand in the Taxco manner. It belongs to the First Design Period of 1931 to 1946.

The hammered surface is the tell. Where machine production would leave a smooth bowl, the visible planishing marks announce the handwork that defined Spratling's founding decade, when output was shaped by hand rather than struck by die.

A specialized form like the caddy spoon, made in the early period and finished by hand, is among the less common Spratling table objects to come to market.
