A plain silver tray with a rolled rim, this piece earns its place through restraint, the form reduced to a clean surface and a single rolled edge. It belongs to the Third Design Period of 1951 to 1967 and was included in the 1965 traveling exhibit The World of William Spratling.
The absence of ornament is the point. In his later hollowware Spratling could let a tray rest on proportion and finish alone, the rolled rim the only gesture. That an unadorned tray was chosen for the traveling exhibit speaks to the strength of the bare form.
The model was made in more than one size, catalogued at $30.40 for the smaller and rising to $50.80 by 1967 for the larger. Exhibited examples of the plain tray come to market only occasionally.
