A tall silver cigarette box topped by a detachable lid with a large ball and loops is a First Period piece that shows Spratling building ornament out of pure silver elements, the ball and loop, rather than applied decoration. The upright proportion sets it apart from his low, wide boxes and gives the lid's ball-and-loop finial real prominence.
The ball and looped wire belong to the early vocabulary Spratling drew from cord and saddle-ornament sources in his first years of work (Morrill, pdf p. 39). The piece is recorded in Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. As an early form it is read by its First Period hallmark and the quality of the handwork.
