Curatorial note

A silver bow set with a cabochon amethyst, this brooch renders a soft, knotted form in metal and anchors it with a single purple stone, the cabochon catching at the center of the bow. The bow gives the brooch a quality of movement, the amethyst a point of color against the silver.

The brooch was offered in the Montgomery Ward Christmas Book of 1943, the years Spratling silver reached a national American audience through the Ward catalogues (Morrill, p. 53), placing it in the workshop's First Design Period.

Recorded in the Morrill and Berk survey, in Hecho En México, and in the 1943 Montgomery Ward catalogue, the bow brooch is a well-documented example of the workshop's stone-set First Period jewelry.
