Lapis and onyx meet in this pin, two stones set against each other and against silver in the Los Castillo stone-inlay manner. The contrast of deep blue and black is the design, the workshop's habit of combining materials reduced to a brooch.
The taller was known for inlaying stone into metal, part of the experimental approach Morrill associates with the Los Castillo circle (Morrill, p. 206). Pairing lapis with onyx is a study in that color play.
Los Castillo, a Taxco taller grande founded in 1939, had the scale to pursue such combinations across its output (Stromberg, p. 41).
