Curatorial note

Tall, with a curved silver strap handle, a rolled top rim, and a shaped lip terminating in a ball at its base, this is the form Spratling named a "ranch style silver water pitcher" - a label that ties the object to the Taxco-el-Viejo ranch where he settled after leaving Spratling y Artesanos in 1945 (Morrill, p. 257). The name is the maker's own.

The pitcher's plain raised body and emphatic handle reflect the workshop's preference for form over applied ornament. Detail is concentrated where the eye and hand meet the object: the rolled rim, the shaped lip, the terminal ball.

It is recorded in Morrill's William Spratling and the Mexican Silver Renaissance: Maestros de Plata, the standard scholarly account of the maker.
